Summer Explorers

Our Summer Explorers travel programs offer
you opportunities to engage with other cultures
in meaningful ways.

Trips are designed around a wide range of topics: the arts, literature, history, religion, world languages, and environmental, socioeconomic, and political issues.

You’ll connect with other cultures and people as an active participant rather than a passive observer, whether you're staying with a host family in a language-immersion program or participating in a service-learning project. The intercultural competencies and life experiences you’ll gain will help
you become an adaptable, flexible, and self-aware global citizen, ready to succeed at school and beyond.

  • Headwaters to Home

A Paddling Adventure Through the Connecticut River Stewardscape
    June 4 to 13, 2025.

Northfield Mount Hermon students will join Loomis Chaffee and Deerfield Academy students to participate in the “Headwaters to Home” expedition— an interdisciplinary learning adventure along one of New England’s most prominent ecological features: the Connecticut River. Following a place-based training and orientation program in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, the group will depart the Connecticut River’s headwaters by canoe, paddling south past all three campuses. Stops along the way will include prominent sites and conversations with local experts in art, geology, hydrology, and Indigenous history and culture. These experts will help participants contemplate how the river creates a living place and how people have made their homes along it. By the time students pull their boats out of the water, they will have developed an intellectual, emotional, and embodied understanding of this watershed as both a socioecological entity and a metaphor for something larger: a paradigm for living well in a place wherever you go.

For current NMH 9th-11th graders. Application process. Limited spots available. For more information Summer Connecticut River Paddling Expedition: Headwaters to Home
